Gen Z marketing strategy for 2024 election

As Kamala Harris gears up for the 2024 U.S. Presidential election, her strategy to engage Gen Z voters has centered on tapping into popular online trends, particularly on TikTok. Her campaign shifted the @KamalaHQ account from Biden’s, quickly gaining traction with memes and pop culture references like “brat summer” and “coconut memes.” For example, a post referencing Charli XCX garnered 3.4 million views, while another video featuring a song from Chappell Roan reached 54 million views.

However, experts stress that winning over Gen Z requires more than viral moments. While these efforts have generated enthusiasm, they won’t be enough to secure votes. Harris will need to clearly articulate her policy positions, especially on critical issues like foreign policy, to build trust with this demographic. Gen Z voters are deeply aware of political impacts and skeptical of superficial campaign tactics.

As Harris gains attention online, she must now pivot to communicating her stances on key issues with clarity and consistency. Gen Z’s focus on the future and their diverse concerns require Harris to move beyond memes and into substantive policy discussions.

In contrast, Trump’s campaign, which has been strong on social media, faces the challenge of engaging with a much younger competitor. Trump’s social media presence, especially on platforms like TikTok, is significant, but his strategy will need to adapt to effectively counter Harris. While Trump’s support base remains robust, expanding beyond the core MAGA group and addressing Harris’s policy positions directly will be critical in this new electoral landscape.
