Currently the bill supporting the Tiktok ban has made it through the Senate and has been signed by President Joe Biden which is a decree to potentially oust TikTok unless its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, unbinds itself from the app within a year.
Now a statute, this divestment-or-die legislation sets ByteDance against the clock. The countdown begins, with nine months allotted for negotiations, extendable by the president for an additional three months upon observing substantial progress.
Initially, this bill faced a rocky road in the Senate, teetering on the brink of stalling after its House passage. However, strategic political maneuvers steered it to Biden’s desk. By bundling the TikTok ultimatum, which elongated the divestment period beyond the prior six months, with crucial foreign aid for American allies, the House coerced the Senate to address both issues simultaneously. This tactical move not only ensured passage but also swayed previously hesitant lawmakers to lend their support.
