Diana Peralta (the one and only @life.as.diana.danielle), started her journey as a content creator by staying authentic to herself. All the content she posts on Fanbase, shows a tiny glimmer into her everyday life.
In this session, Diana gives us a deeper look at what made her shift her focus to the creator economy and how she wanted to be a part of it (especially on Fanbase!).
How Lifestyle Meets Creation
Several years ago, Diana started to see the rise of “vlogging” take the internet by storm. New content creators were popping up left and right. People were popping up everywhere, from families to lone individuals, and wanted to share their lives online. “At the time, I just wanted to vlog. We traveled a lot, and I just wanted to make video diaries of my life…not necessarily for an audience. I just posted it in case anyone else wanted to see it, and that was almost ten years ago!”, she stated.
After Diana saw the overwhelmingly positive response to her original video, she knew that creating content (which surrounded lifestyle/culture) was where she wanted her career to head towards. Following this success, she dived deeper into what specific topics she wanted to cover in her everyday life. “I vlogged for quite a while until I started building a business with my husband, and then I started adding business-related content. This was kind of an introduction for me to fashion content because we would have agents come in to work, and…..it was hard to discuss how people should dress in an office setting. This led to me taking selfies of my business outfits, which included what I wore to the office that specific day, and they started doing well. I thought well, since business attire isn’t the only thing I wear, so since everyone’s into this, I decided to dabble more into fashion, and it kind of ballooned into what it is now.”, she shared. Diana’s journey truly shows that you never know what people will find interesting, and how just being yourself might surprise you!
Adding Vegan Content into the Mix
As Diana’s popularity grew, she knew she didn’t want to limit herself to just one topic in her videos. She had seen cooking videos take off with other creators, and she had just started her vegan journey herself. “My dad and I both had gained a ton of weight. We were both well over 200 pounds, and we had made a pact together that we were going to lose some weight. We actually started out on the “blood type diet”, which showed different foods that were not reacting well with my body. We did that diet together, and within a few months, I was down 30 pounds. I decided I wanted to take it further since I had already changed how I was eating. I thought maybe now could be the time I take this vegan journey. I actually came across a video from Gary Yourofsky that made me go cold turkey, and I’ve been vegan ever since.” she exclaimed. This propelled Diana to start sharing her everyday vegan recipes that she was making for herself and her family.
Transitioning to Fanbase
As the world of social media expanded over the years, Diana saw that more and more platforms were becoming available to creators. She was specifically introduced to Fanbase when other social platforms were disregarding black creators. “I found Fanbase when TikTok Shop had the whole “Black Girl Follow Train” movement, and how TikTok treated us. That came alone, and I thought I could really build a community through this. We really lifted each other up! I then built a successful community on TikTok. But then….TikTok rained heavily on that parade, and I think we literally got punished for doing that train since it took the entire app over. After the train got killed, my engagement dropped. TikTok wasn’t showing my content to people anymore, and I wasn’t getting the views I was usually getting. I still had people from the train saying that they weren’t even seeing my content anymore on their feed.”, she expressed.
This frustrating endeavor is what eventually led Diana to Fanbase. She was tired of supporting social platforms that wanted to silence black creators. “After all that happened, someone said that the same thing was happening to them and that we needed a black-owned app. Someone in my comments section actually shared that we already had one, and it was Fanbase! Once I heard that, I immediately downloaded it and started posting!”, she revealed. Out of an event of frustration, an app that welcomes all creators was finally revealed, and Diana was grateful. She even made $25 only after a month of starting out on Fanbase!
